The program offers an authentic, hypothesis-driven research experience at one of the nation's top cancer centers, providing unparalleled mentorship and opportunities for significant research contributions.
The MD Anderson Summer Program in Cancer Research (SPCR) is a 10-week, full-time, paid, on-campus research experience for undergraduate students interested in biomedical research careers. Students are paired with faculty mentors to conduct hypothesis-driven, project-based investigations in cutting-edge cancer research. The program emphasizes cancer genetics and epigenetics, with research areas including cell growth control, genome maintenance and DNA repair, stem cells, immunology, cancer therapeutics, and computational and systems biology. Participants gain hands-on lab experience, attend weekly lunch lectures on topics like DNA structure, epigenetics, and signal transduction, and engage in social events and tours of MD Anderson campuses. The program culminates in a scientific symposium where interns present their research, often leading to co-authorship on scientific abstracts and manuscripts. Students also attend scientific lectures, seminars, and career development events, and have the opportunity to present their work at a CATALYST Program-wide poster session.
Students typically work 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, conducting hands-on research in a faculty lab, attending scientific lectures and seminars, and participating in career development events.
This program is best for outstanding undergraduate students considering careers in biomedical research, particularly those with a strong interest in cancer research.
